Providence Care is southeastern Ontario’s leading provider of specialized mental health care, physical medicine and rehabilitation, specialized geriatric services, complex continuing care, palliative care and longterm care. With more than 1,600 staff and 240 physicians, residents and clerks, Providence Care is committed to high quality care. Providence Care Hospital, our new state of the art hospital, opened in April 2017. Our hospital is the first publicly-funded hospital in North America to fully integrate long-term mental health and psychiatry programs with physical rehabilitation, palliative care and complex care. The entire hospital has been designed to be welcoming and inclusive of all people, no matter what age, ability or needs.

Position:  Registered Practical Nurse - Mental Health

Region:  Frontenac & Kingston

Description:  To provide direct professional nursing care to patients requiring mental health services and presenting with less complex care needs. Utilizing the principles of the nursing process and in collaboration with the RN and members of the clinical team, the RPN can provide care to patients with more complex needs within his/her level of competence. The RPN, as a member of the clinical team, contributes to the patient’s journey toward maximum independence and wellness.

Education & Experience:
• Registered Practical Nursing Diploma and current unrestricted Registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario; OR, Combination of equivalent education and experience and current unrestricted license to practice with the College of Nurses of Ontario
• Recent experience in an acute psychiatric setting
• Current CPR certification

Key Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
• Demonstrated excellent interpersonal and communication skills; verbal, nonverbal and written
• Demonstrated knowledge of and skill in the care of patients with severe and persistent mental illness; inclusive of assessment; problem identification and current treatment modalities
• Effective decision making skills assessing a comprehensive range of variables to interpret, analyze and solve problems
• Demonstrated knowledge of the Mental Health Act of Ontario and Mental Health Reform as well as the legal implication and of the inherent principles
• Demonstrated adaptability and flexibility to respond to emerging and dynamic program needs. Ability to think quickly during crisis situations
• Knowledge of relevant forensic methods and evaluation tools related to assessment and reduction of risk to re-offend
• Working knowledge of relevant sections of the criminal code as they apply to the assessment, management and treatment of forensic patients
• Proven ability to comply with established standards
• Demonstrated commitment to providing person-centered care following the established principles of a Recovery Model of care
• Applicable experience in computer applications/software
• Demonstrated ability to prioritize work effectively, manage a full work-load and meet deadlines in a busy environment with frequent interruptions
• Demonstrated trouble shooting skills and ability to problem solve issues that may arise in carrying out the duties of this position
• Demonstrated understanding and commitment to health and safety policies, procedures and applicable legislation
• Demonstrated person-centred focus and commitment to the Mission, Vision, Values and strategic directions of the department and of Providence Care
• Demonstrated professional work ethic and behaviours in interaction with internal and external contacts
• Demonstrated effectiveness working with minimal supervision with proven reliability and trustworthiness
• Demonstrated good physical condition to meet the physical demands of the position and ability to attend work regularly
• Satisfactory Criminal Reference Check & Vulnerable Sector Screen for external candidates if hired; must be an original copy, current within last six months
• Bilingual in French and English language, preferred


Salary:  To be negotiated

Terms of Employment:  Part-Time
