Position Summary:
 
The primary role of the Professional Practice Learning Specialist is to support quality patient care and excellence in professional and clinical practice by facilitating staff development, through orientation, continuing education and ongoing support.
Under the direction of the Unit Director, the Professional Practice Learning Specialist will use the principles of instructional design to analyze learners’ and organizational needs and to determine instructional goals and objectives. The Professional Practice Learning Specialist will design, select and sequence instructional strategies, construct methods for evaluating learner achievement and implement and evaluate the learning across clinical programs. They will act as a role model for health care providers in accordance with professional standards, in both the formal and informal learning environments. The Professional Practice Learning Specialist will develop a network with other centers and the health care community regarding interprofessional education and professional development.
 
Participates in service and hospital-wide activities and programs that model and promote a safe and healthy patient-centred environment and that contribute to quality improvement and risk management initiatives.

Education and Experience:
 

  • Current registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario
  • Member of the Registered Nurses Association of Ontario
  • Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing Science (BSCN) is required
  • Master’s Degree in Education, Nursing or another related health care field is desirable
  • College or University level certificate in Adult Education required
  • Solid understanding of the principles, philosophies and theories of Adult Learning
  • Minimum of five (5) years or progressive, recent clinical nursing experience with preference for specialty in critical care areas
  • Experience in needs assessment, educational program design, curriculum development, delivery and evaluation
  • Experience with talent development, mentorship and preceptorship programs that support knowledge and skills transfer in a workplace setting
  • Two (2) years’ experience in adult education within a healthcare related field

 
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
 
  • Above average verbal and written communication skills and excellent project and time management skills
  • Proven ability to work effectively both independently and as a member of an inter-professional team and ability to work in a rapidly changing environment
  • Customer service focus
  • Intermediate to advanced functionality in Microsoft Office, specifically Excel spreadsheets and Power Point presentations
  • Strong attention to detail and critical thinking skills
  • Good attendance and availability required
